Reflections on new technology development

The old AT&T is back

The old AT&T is back. Slate and others are reporting on the new "Ma Bell" which is made up of all the "Baby Bell" companies that were created in 1984 when the monopoly was destroyed by antitrust regulators in the US. Since 1984 we have seen a lot of change in the industry. Since then we have seen the deployment of cellular telephones, the Internet and satellite distribution on a mass scale.

Taking business online

As my systems start to take shape around the Blackberry I purchased last month in Montreal I am beginning to see an evolution to a new kind of work. Already I spend most of my day online, but many of the business decisions I make take place in the offline world. Sometimes initiatives never hit an LCD screen but that can be a good thing if you're as busy as I am.

Internet remote control

Today I spent just 25 minutes coming up with the idea of changing my music with my blackberry as a remote control. Knowing nothing about programming for the device I turned to my server farm to write a script.

The server accepts the message with the request, uses some "closest match" logic to know what you're talking about and then plays the music. In my 3 years using Linux I don't think I developed anything so cool (imho) so fast.

Wifi the new best ever?

Wifi is the new best ever. The best ever cafes where the nerds hang out. You can only get reception if you go to the places that are the new best ever. What about all the other cafes without wifi? Not the new best ever. No signal, no networking, no dice!

It all makes me think of the debit card payment system in Canada. Some people will only go places where it is accepted so they never use cash. They track everything with software when the statements come in. Do they ever get to try flavour of the week though? Highly unlikely.
